Return Of The Unknown: tell us your story

Tell us your family's First World War story.

“How should we remember? We can’t… All we can remember is what they have done, and the peace they gave us… All we can do is ‘sing the anthem’; tell the story”, Michael Morpurgo.

Do you have an ancestor that fought in the conflict?

As part of our exciting new production Return Of The Unknown, commemorating the centenary of the Armistice, we want to shine a spotlight on the stories of the thousands of Kentish men and women who served in the First World War.

Help us to tell their story as part of an exhibition at Dover Marine Station during Return Of The Unknown (Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 November), remembering the part they played in the war.

What we would like

When did they serve? What was their role? Whether you know a lot or a little about their story we would love to hear about them. We are looking for you to write a short piece (no longer than an A4 page) about your ancestor’s involvement in the First World War and, if you have it, send a picture (no originals please) that we could display alongside the story. Please bear in mind that your piece will appear exactly as you have written it.

How we will use the stories you send

The pictures and stories of your family will be displayed as part of a Remembrance Wall for audience members to read as they pass through the venue.

This is a fantastic opportunity to share with the community and make known the important unknown stories of those local men and women who fought in the conflict, and to exhibit to them to an audience of 2,500 over four days throughout the event.

How to submit

Please send your story and picture to our Assistant Producer Andrew by email. Do also get in touch if you have any further questions.
