About the Marlowe Academy of Performing Arts
The Marlowe Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) is a two-year, full-time educational programme for passionate and creative young people aged 16 to 19 who aspire to a career in the performing arts. Delivered in partnership between the Marlowe Theatre and the East Kent Colleges Group (EKC), MAPA provides a unique opportunity to learn, train, and perform within one of the country’s leading regional theatres.

A professional training environment
Based in the heart of Canterbury, MAPA students train across both the Marlowe Theatre and Canterbury College, gaining direct experience of the professional world of theatre. Learning takes place in purpose-built rehearsal studios and performance spaces where students become part of a vibrant and creative community of emerging performers. The students become embedded residents at the Marlowe Theatre, giving students an authentic insights in to how professional productions are made, both on and off stage.

Our programme
The MAPA course leads to a UAL Level 3 Diploma in Performing and Productions Arts, a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to three A Levels. The programme focuses on developing the core skills every performer needs — from acting technique, voice, and movement to stagecraft, physical theatre, and devised performance. Alongside this practical training, students explore acting theory, character development, and performance analysis, gaining both the artistic and academic foundation to support their creative work.

Industry experience
Students benefit from regular workshops, masterclasses, and mentoring sessions with working professionals, as well as opportunities to participate in live performances, work placements, and collaborative projects. This immersive approach ensures that every student leaves MAPA with the confidence, skills, and industry insight needed to take the next step in their journey — whether that’s drama school, higher education, or entering the creative industries directly.
