Making the Story Sing: Write a Musical Theatre Hit

Over a career spanning 40 years in musical theatre, Robert Hyman has worked on hit musicals including The Big Life and Reasons to be Cheerful, he’s written 300 songs and counting for Theatre Royal Stratford East productions (earning an Olivier nomination for Cinderella), and he’s collaborated with the likes of Ray Davies of The Kinks and Pete Townshend of The Who.

This three-hour workshop will begin with a Q&A – your opportunity to learn more about what makes a successful career in musical theatre. Then, through a practical songwriting session in collaboration with the group, you’ll learn how to craft a musical theatre showstopper and hone your storytelling skills through song.

Robert Hyman

Robert Hyman has over forty years’ experience working in the Performing Arts as a composer, lyricist, musical director and performer.

Robert’s first musical Hatchback – The Computer Musical was published by I.M.P and subsequently performed all over the world.

Since then, Robert has had musicals play at venues such as Hackney Empire, Shaw Theatre and Millfield Theatre. He has written twenty-five musicals for Image Musical Theatre, over 300 songs for Theatre Royal Stratford East productions and was commissioned to write Joan – a Musical to celebrate Stratford East’s 140th birthday.

Whilst with Stratford East, Robert worked on hit musicals The Big Life, Reasons to be Cheerful and was nominated for an Olivier award for his work as composer and lyricist on their pantomime Cinderella and won a Great British Pantomime Award for his score for Rapunzel.

Robert has collaborated with many notable names including Ray Davies of The Kinks on his musical Come Dancing and Pete Townshend on his rock opera Tommy.
