One of the greatest writers of his age.
Joseph Conrad arrived in England aged 21 without a word of the language. He then learnt English on a boat in Lowestoft (where he transported coals from Newcastle) with a little help from his copies of The Bible and the Complete Works Of Shakespeare. By the time of his death in Canterbury at the age of 66, he had become one of the greatest writers of his age.
His writing mirrors the darkest heart of humanity, exploring themes such as political extremism, terror, colonial brutality and oppression across the vast and stormy oceans of the world.
His novel The Secret Agent is celebrated as the first spy novel and his work Heart Of Darkness is one of the greatest works in world literature.
